Event Description

Join us for this special event celebrating Violins of Hope - a world-famous collection of restored string instruments that were played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. Members of Jewish Community Centers (JCC) Chicago will share the background of this resonant exhibit and the stories of select violins, accompanied by live performance.

Live accompaniment by violinists Aviva Chertok and Linda Veleckis Nussbaum.

Russian American violinist Aviva Chertok has performed extensively as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician, and has participated in many international music festivals. Aviva was a member of the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory from 2008-2012, where her quartet performed on Chicago's WFMT as well as on NPR's From the Top and won prizes at state and national competitions. Aviva earned her Master's degree in violin performance from the Royal College of Music

Violinist, violist, conductor and teacher Linda Veleckis Nussbaum has performed as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout the United States and Europe. In recent recitals, she has performed the complete sonatas of Beethoven and Brahms, composers of the Baltic diaspora and several programs commemorating composers lost in the Holocaust. A dedicated teacher, Linda  serves as Director of Orchestras at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park. Her private studio in Chicago focuses on developing strong technical foundation and preparing students for competitions and auditions.

Violins of Hope is presented in partnership with JCC Chicago. Now touring Chicagoland libraries, museums, and cultural institutions with a message of hope, resistance, resilience, and unity, a selection of violins will be on display at Arlington Heights Memorial Library August 7 through September 7.
