Event Description

Wider Lens returns with the documentary Mossville: When Great Trees Fall. A once-thriving community founded by formerly enslaved and free people of color, and an economically flourishing safe haven for generations of African American families. Today it's a breeding ground for petrochemical plants. Mossville is not-rated and runs 76 minutes. A facilitated discussion will follow with Jerome McDonnell and Eduardo Flores.

Jerome McDonnell hosted WBEZ's global affairs program Worldview from 1994 until October of 2019. He was WBEZ’s environment and climate reporter through 2020. Over the past twenty-five years, he has interviewed world leaders and influential people, including Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, Condoleezza Rice and the Dalai Lama. Worldview’s strong sense of social justice means some of Jerome’s most interesting guests were peasant organizers, environmental activists, and social entrepreneurs.

Eduardo Flores was born and raised in Waukegan, Illinois. He’s currently studying at College of Lake County. He is a member of Clean Power Lake County and has spoken out about coal ash rules at a local listening session last fall and at a statewide virtual hearing this year; advocating for CEJA with elected officials in Springfield; and speaking at a youth town hall during this year’s virtual lobby day.
