Storytime in the Park, an Arlington Heights summertime favorite, returns with new safety precautions in place. Join us for a 20-minute outdoor storytime at Pioneer Park and/or Frontier Park, and stop by the bookmobile’s table to get a book bundle or activity kit to take home.   

Please familiarize yourself with our safety precautions before arriving:   

  • Everyone over the age of 2 must wear a mask to join the storytime.   

  • The number of attendees will be limited in accordance to state guidelines.   

  • When you arrive, staff will direct your family to a hula hoop. During the storytime, children are asked to stay in their hula hoops to encourage social distancing.  

  • Browsing on the bookmobile is not permitted at this time.   

The bookmobile will arrive at 10:30 a.m. Storytime will begin around 10:40 a.m. In case of bad weather, the storytime will be canceled. 

 

Tween 

Celebrate Women’s Equality Day and the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage on August 26! Pick up a tween activity kit outside the Dunton entrance of the library and make your own suffragist pin. Kits will be available through September 6. Learn more about women’s suffrage in this Wakelet

This meeting's theme will be graphic novels (this includes comics and manga). Plus, one lucky attendee will win an AUTHOR-SIGNED BOOK! Dice Guild: Free Play: Play roleplaying games online with other teens! You can be a wizard exploring goblin-filled dungeons, a bewildered teen investigating a spooky small town, an intrepid robot in outer space, a raccoon in the middle of an underground drag race, and so much more. Friday, August 28, 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Tween DIY at Home: Door Hanger: Learn how to make your own door hanger with Miss Dana on YouTube. Pick up supplies for this activity outside the library's Dunton entrance on the clothesline. Look for the bags labeled, "Tween Activity Kit." Can't make it to the library? No problem, you can use your own supplies and follow our instructional video to complete the project without ever leaving your house.

Tween Tuesdays: Mindfulness and Meditation: Are you starting to feel the new school year jitters? Join us on Tuesday, August 11, 3-3:45 p.m. for a relaxing afternoon that will leave you feeling recharged and ready to start the school year right. Pick up supplies to make a calming jar at the Kids' World desk before the program, or gather supplies from home. You will need: Jar with lid, clear glue or glitter glue (about 1/4 cup) and glitter (optional if you have glitter glue).

A panel of the library's Teen Advisory Board (TAB) members, all real-life high school students, are available to answer your questions about how they’re preparing for this next school year. Teen Film Fest: Stay at Home Challenge: Join us for the 14th Annual Teen Film Fest! 2020 is a unique year and so this year's Film Fest comes with a twist -- we are asking all the filmmakers to create their movies at home and take part in the Stay at Home Challenge. Our Film Fest event will be online where we'll screen this year's teen film entries, hear from our panel of judges, and award the winning teen filmmakers. Friday, August 14, 7-9 p.m. 

 

Teen Advisory Board (TAB): Attend a special online meeting of the Teen Advisory Board (TAB), a high school volunteer group that involves community projects, making your voice heard, and earning service hours! Chalk the Walk

Hop, skip, and twirl through the sidewalk obstacle course at the future home of the library's new makerspace, starting Sunday, August 9 (noon-5 p.m.), with creative artwork by our TAB volunteers! Pick up your own baggie of chalk from the Kids World Desk in the library and create your own obstacle course at home, while supplies last. Please tag @AHML on social media so we can see all our friends! This program was rescheduled due to rain and will be held on August 9.

We will be reading Cog by Greg Van Eekhout - Wall-E meets The Wild Robot in this instant classic about five robots on a mission to rescue their inventor from the corporation that controls them all. Tween Tuesdays: Harry Potter Drawing Workshop:  Learn how to draw Harry Potter and Hermione in the adorable chibi style. Art teacher Christine Thornton from Hello Art Studio will walk you through the process step by step using simple drawing supplies you have at home like pencil, eraser, colored pencils and thin sharpies for outlining. Whatever you have at home, we’ll make it work! This online class includes an instructional video, a chance to connect with the teacher and classmates on Facebook as well as a Zoom hangout where you can chat with other tweens and show off your drawings. Tuesday, July 28, 4-5 p.m.

Read Aloud Book Club: Join us for a book club where you don’t need to read the book beforehand! At each virtual meeting of the Read Aloud Book Club, we will listen to a book and then discuss what we heard. The book club will meet once a week for four weeks. For grades 2-4. We will be reading Cog by Greg Van Eekhout - Wall-E meets The Wild Robot in this instant classic about five robots on a mission to rescue their inventor from the corporation that controls them all. Desserts, Books and More: One summer’s day, ten-year-old India Opal goes down to the local supermarket for some groceries and comes home with a dog. It’s because of her new dog, Winn-Dixie, that Opal's life begins to change.  

We will virtually discuss Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo and complete a craft activity. We will also be making an origami dog. If you'd like to bring a snack and beverage to our book discussion, please do so. For grades 2-3 with an adult. Monday, July 20, 6:30-7:15 p.m.

Teen Mario Kart Tournament: Have you mastered the deadly twists and turns on the Rainbow Road? Do you know exactly when to launch a banana peel at your opponents? Come and show off your racing skills at our Virtual Mario Kart Tournament. For teens grades 7-12. Wednesday, July 15, 4-6 p.m. 

Equipment Needed: Nintendo Switch console, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to be able to play in the tournament. 

Teen Advisory Board (TAB): Attend a special online meeting of the Teen Advisory Board (TAB), a high school volunteer group that involves community projects, making your voice heard, and earning service hours! Teen Film Fest Stay Home Challenge

Teen Film Fest: Stay Home Challenge

Calling all teen filmmakers! Get creative this summer and make a film for our 14th Annual Teen Film Fest! This year, we’re throwing in an extra challenge by asking teens to shoot films from home or while social distancing. Maybe it’s an animated film, a music video using household objects come to life, or even a horror movie set on Zoom?! Select films will be screened for a virtual audience, judged by an expert panel of content creators, and may win a cash prize. Submission rules, entry form, and more info at ahml.info/teens/filmfest

Microsoft is offering free workshops throughout the summer. On Monday, July 13, they’re partnering with Dear Evan Hansen to provide a one-hour workshop to explore how we can better connect while we’re social distancing.
