Event Description

In ancient Egypt, sculptures, jewelry, vessels and ritual objects were often created with faience. A type of ceramic material, faience is made of common materials -quartz, alkaline salts, lime and mineral-based colorants, while maintaining important status among metals and precious stones, like turquoise. The objects were considered magical, filled with the undying shimmer of the sun and imbued with the powers of rebirth. A well-recognized object made with faience is Hippopotamus ("William") ca. 1961-1878 B.C.

In this class, we will be using Sculpey to simulate faience and create our own hippopotamus sculpture.

Ages 18 & up.
