In 1936, Charlotte Cross is offered a coveted spot on an archaeological dig in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. But when tragedy strikes, her life is changed forever and she vows never to return. Decades later, in 1978 New York City, 18-year-old Annie Jenkins is thrilled to land a job assisting legendary former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, who’s in the midst of organizing the famous Met Gala. When a priceless Egyptian artifact vanishes during the event, amid whispers of a long-dormant pharaoh’s curse, Annie is drawn into a mystery that leads her straight to Charlotte, now a reclusive associate curator at the Met’s Department of Egyptian Art. Charlotte and Annie must work together to recover the missing antiquity and as the stakes grow higher, their search takes them to the place Charlotte swore she’d never return: Egypt. If they have any hope of finding the artifact, Charlotte will need to confront the demons of her past — which may mean leading them both directly into danger.
