About the hosts
Jim DeRogatis is a professor in the school of Communications and Culture at Columbia College Chicago. He spent fifteen years as the pop music critic at the Chicago Sun-Times and continues to cover news and culture as a freelance writer for outlets including the New Yorker. He is the author of 11 books, among them critically acclaimed Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly and Let It Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs, America's Greatest Rock Critic. He has played in punk-rock bands since age thirteen but jokes that he is a drummer, not a musician.
From 1990 to 2020, Greg Kot served as The Chicago Tribune music critic. In 2020-2022, he oversaw editorial for the multimedia music platform Coda Collection. He is currently developing a play based on his award-winning biography of Mavis Staples, I’ll Take You There. Kot’s seven books include his Wilco biography Learning How to Die and Ripped, about the digital music revolution. He also has contributed to books on Johnny Cash, George Harrison and R.E.M., as well as record guides published by Rolling Stone and Trouser Press. He has been a regular contributor to Rolling Stone and a dozen national publications.
