In a world where goods and services are commodified, and quality and safety levels are directly proportional to price, how does the abstract become concrete? Author, illustrator, and translator Deena Mohamed explores this question in her graphic novel Shubeik Lubeik, which compiles six years' worth of storytelling, and blends fairytale magic into the realities of contemporary Egyptian society. "Shubeik Lubeik," an Arabic phrase that translates to "Your Wish is My Command," introduces a tantalizing concept that we all dream of at one point or another--what if wishes could come true? More importantly, what are the consequences of satisfying all our wishes and desires? This magical realism and fantastical settings of this story bring the complex and often overlooked problems of our society into sharper focus in a way that is utterly unique to graphic storytelling. Join us as we read and reflect on how key themes in Mohamed's story resonate with our world today and explore the value of truth in fiction.
