Today's belief in an endless progress tends toward an almost total rejection of spiritual wisdom's worldviews as being naïve, out-moded, and contrary to empirical evidence. The premises of modernism permeate our culture and our thinking so thoroughly that it is often very difficult for an individual to step back and see them clearly.
