NOTES

Originally produced by State of the Art in 1987

We produced this film over twenty-five years ago, at a time, when most people with disabilities were excluded from education and often warehoused in such institutional settings as hospitals for the mentally ill, adult residential centers and large group homes. Allowing people with disabilities into regular school classrooms, job sites and other community activities is known as mainstreaming or inclusion. Regular Lives, portrays early, successful approaches to inclusion, with children with disabilities sharing in play and work with typical children. Regular Lives has provided a model for parents, teachers, and communities interested in removing obstacles to children and adults with disabilities, as well strategies and goals to achieve mainstreaming. After its broadcast television release, Regular Lives, has become required viewing in teacher training for special education and regular education. Consider a classic in disability education. The film is narrated by Martin Sheen
