NOTES

Transcribed by CSAGSI members from a ledger entitled "Umrtni Kniha 18782-1889" [Death Lists 1872-1889], property of St. Procopius Church in Chicago, Ill., established in early 1876 to serve the many Czechs who moved into Pilsen following the Great Chicago Fire, when new zoning ordinances, requiring all new structures near their parish church in Bridgeport to be constructed of brick, made the old neighborhood unaffordable

Ledger, written in Czech and English, with some German, Slovak, and Latin words, contains some vital statistics, but is primarily a financial accounting, containing notes on funerals, purchases of cemetery lots, and lists of expenses. Death entries include surname, given name, age, dates [of death? of funeral?], and occasionally the location of a grave site
