We had decided to drive to a town called Hesdin, which was close to Calais. It was two in the afternoon when we arrived. #2 We went to see the houses in the Seven Valleys, which were supposedly cheap, but we didn't have enough money to buy any of them. The estate agent gave us three houses, which we thought was very generous, and we drove away. #3 We drove through several small villages and passed hundreds of soggy fields in which muddy cows looked miserable. We spotted a church spire just about visible in the distance, but with no sign of life. Eventually, we reached the location of the first house on the list. #4 We reached a town that was completely deserted. We didn't see a single person the whole hour we were there. I spoke French with the man at the gate, and he let us in
