"Clara Barton was once a very shy girl. So much so that her parents worried about it. But as she grew up she became a great patriot and a trailblazer. She taught herself to be a nurse so that she could tend to the needs of wounded soldiers in the Civil War. She set up the Missing Soldiers Office to help families find their loved ones, and finally she founded the American Red Cross.She was also its first president. To this day, the American Red Cross offers relief to those who suffer the ravages of war, disease, or natural disaster. The once shy girl has taken her rightful place in America's National Women's Hall of Fame."--Page [4] of cover
