From 1960 until 1996, Guatemala was torn by a civil war between government forces and rebel groups. The war resulted in approximately 200,000 deaths. Since a peace agreement was signed, Guatemalans have gained greater political and civil rights. The economy of Guatemala has also grown. However, the country still faces many challenges.
