NOTES

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview: #1 In 2001, I was a law professor at the University of California at Davis. I was planning a special vacation with my wife, Tony, and we found a studio apartment in Paris for rent at a reasonable price. We were not world travelers, but a trip to Paris was a big deal for us. #2 I was sick for the entire second week in Paris, and I spent it bedridden. I was unable to read, and I tried to watch French television, but I was quickly bored and restless. I gave up in frustration. #3 I spent most of each day listening to the BBC on a shortwave radio, which I had bought for myself when I was sick. The BBC had a wonderful array of programs, including clever and funny quiz shows. I began listening to NPR's broadcast of the BBC News every day soon after returning to Davis and finding myself bedbound. #4 I turned on the TV one last time and discovered that the French Open was on all day long. I made a bed for myself on the floor close to the TV, and a love affair was born. I still watch a lot of tennis
