The slave captain's eyes wandered as he pondered his options. Down on the quay, a young white couple stood out like sore nipples on a sow pig, he noticed. They were respectably dressed, the man in a mid-thigh black sack coat and gray moleskin trousers. A black slouch hat covered a full head of brown hair. He had dark good looks, bluegray eyes and a lean, strong face adorned with a cinnamon-brown beard, cropped close. The woman was darker still, a beauty with shiny black hair parted in the middle and tied in a bun under a lavender poke bonnet. A deep blue traveling cape covered a brown jacket and matching ankle length skirt. A simple white cotton chemisette contrasted with her dusky olive skin. But, while comfortably dressed, they were not rich. They clutched everything they owned in four cloth satchels
