The journey took the train farther inland, through Portsmouth past the stony ruins of the old Navy Yard. The route would hug the northern edge of the Great Dismal on its way to the rail junction. About halfway through the swamp, the train would stop at a drainage canal dug by the railroad. There the Union contingent guarding the train would disembark and return to Norfolk by handcar.
