NOTES

As a child Rita Kerner is thought to be mentally challenged due to seizures suffered in infancy. She spends all her energy trying to be "normal", in spite of having strange dreams which she draws picture of incessantly. As she grows up, she finds acceptance through her unusual artistic gift. However, she vacillates between studying art and developing her independence as the realization of her attraction to girls develops. Lost in romantic idealism, Rita has no idea what her artistic talent will on day reveal, however. As an adult, Rita has to put her art aside to work and support herself and her child. One night, she begins to have strange dreams and hears odd noises in her apartment at night. Soon the noises become elusive voices, but she cannot find their origin. When the voices become louder and louder, she runs to check on her young son, only to find he is undisturbed and sleeping soundly, as is his dog. Is the apartment haunted, she wonders? Rita remembers the landlord telling her that the old woman who'd lived there had passed away, which is how the place had become vacant and available. Rita is not sure what to think. Does she believe in life after death or lost souls? Is this all in her head? Should she accept the suggestion of her former partner and go see a psychiatrist? What transpires in Rita's quest to save her sanity sends her down a path of time and space where she uncovers the voices calling out to her, her true gift
