"An epic love story and family drama set at the dawn of World War II"--Provided by publisher

"Viann and Isabelle have always been close despite their differences. Younger, bolder sister Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann lives a quiet and content life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. When World War II strikes and Antoine is sent off to fight, Viann and Isabelle's father sends Isabelle to help her older sister cope. As the war progresses, it's not only the sisters' relationship that is tested, but also their strength and their individual senses of right and wrong. With life as they know it changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions"--Provided by publisher

Excellent Read!

Amazing story of two sisters during WWII. So rich in character development but never a slow moment in the action. The story tugs at your heart and urges you to realize how significant one persons commitment to a cause can be. Truly beautiful story about a very difficult time in history.

Excellent book

The book and characters stay with you. It feels like they are alive somewhere else. Superb reading. Highly recommended for everyone who wants to forget about everything else.

Such a great read

Really a good read, grabbed me from the start, already a tear from me in the first 16 pages, I was so caught up with the characters! It continued this way throughout the book, loved the development of the characters and the plot that just keeps unfolding. I loved how she incorporated so much of the history of WW2 in her characters' plots. Worth the time!

Excellent Emotional Read

Absolutely loved this book! Emotional, inspiring, thought provoking, intriguing and so much more. The strong, female characters and places were so vivid. The storyline was of two sisters and the directions their lives took during the most tragic inhumane war ever. The book covers the harsh realities of war, the struggle to survive and the efforts to assist and protect. This unexpected doorway into the past is handled beautifully and reverentially by Hannah. She fills her novel with characters and scenes that call up a vision of the war that is somehow new while being at the same time frighteningly familiar: a young Nazi solider missing his family abroad and clipped by his own horror of the crimes being planned by his countrymen, or the fearful yet curious whispers of civilians which begin to tell of places with strange names where unknown things are happening. Despite the intense sadness of so much of this history, at the core of the novel is a celebration of heroism and a tribute to the unique, inseparable bonds of sisterhood. Despite not being a huge fan of historical fiction, I not only loved this book, but continue to recommend it to everyone I know. It is rare that I give a book 5 stars but there is no doubt about this one. Excellent Read!
