Joe Radek, a likeable, hard-working coal miner, single-handedly takes on the Company against union problems, unsafe conditions and corruption. When his best friend is brutally murdered by the Company's henchmen, he decides to strike. He begins a lonely vigil deep in the coal mines, refusing to come out unless the Company gives their miners the privileges they deserve
