The sudden death of his wife has left Jack lost and alone. He is despised by his son and ignored by neighbours. A ray of sunshine arrives in the unlikely form of the eight-year-old, Florrie, when she moves in next door and delights in Jack's neglected racing pigeon, Ruby, unwittingly rekindling Jack's love for life, while forcing him to come to terms with his past.
