This film is listed as comedy, but it is anything but that. There is nothing funny about an ailing elderly senile father and the struggle he and his daughter Eve go through. Eve takes upon herself the responsibilities of her two selfish sisters who are either in denial or avoidance. They are not only unhelpful, but dump more work on her. Eve desperately tries to keep the peace. The stress she is put through is not comedy; it is pure, needless pressure.
The storyline is great, but executed poorly. If written and directed differently, this could have been a successful, moving drama which the audience can identify with and sympathize.
Some of the interesting dialogues are about the emotional history of the family, what happened between the parents, why the mother disappeared, and the struggles each child went through, for example, the youngest girl states that she is tired of always being treated as the little one. There are many such hints, and touching flashbacks, which add to the power of the drama.
The movie is a bit successful because of Walter Mathau and Meg Ryan who have done the best they can with a mediocre script. All in all, a passable show.
