Event Description

“Hollywood Gets Serious — The Social Issues Films 1940s-50s”
Dann & Raymond’s Movie Club will explore one of the post-WWII trends in Hollywood, the so-called “Social Problem Films” — serious and frank explorations into American social issues of the day that were not touched previously. Alcoholism (“The Lost Weekend”), antisemitism (“Crossfire” and “Gentleman’s Agreement”), racism (“Pinky”), prison reform (“Brute Force”), and other formerly taboo topics. Many of these groundbreaking pictures went on to win the Oscar Best Picture and were the platform for most modern “social dramas.”
