In the past year the library has presented storytimes, STEM clubs, book discussions, author visits, exhibits, summer reading programs and more. We've welcomed the community to celebrate the arts at the District 25 art show and reception, a fairy tale exhibit and costume gala and months of themed programs exploring fairy tales. Arlington Heights came together to read and discuss the themes behind the One Book, One Village book selection and tweens and teens found opportunities to learn and discover together. Local entrepreneurs gathered to share their experiences with small business owners and the library continued to offer new tools for customers to get creative in the Studio.

The library is a busy place thanks to our customers, with nearly 90,000 people attending programs at the library in 2015. Check out our video featuring highlights of the past year, then see a list of upcoming programs at ahml.info.

The library was voted the 2011 Business of the Year by the members of the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce at their annual installation and recognition dinner. Celebrating the honor were, front row, Brian Shepard, Mike Driskell, Shannon Scanlan, and Diane Accurso. Back row, Jennifer Nitch, trustee G. "We're honored to receive this award from the business community. We value our opportunity to partner with them," says Deb Whisler, Director of Communications and Marketing.

Whisler was also an honoree. She received the 2011 President's Award from outgoing president Cindee Manaves for her mentoring and continuing contributions to the Chamber of Commerce.

In the coming year, three library staff members will have leadership roles in the Chamber. IT Manager Mike Driskell joins the Board of Directors, Business Librarian Shannon Scanlan will be Co-Chair of the Chamber's Professional Women's Council and Lead Cataloger Jennifer Nitch continues as Chairman of the Young Professionals. We look forward to a great year and continuing a successful collaboration with the business community.

In recognition of the library's recent five-star rating, Illinois State Representative David Harris delivered a special congratulatory message direct from Springfield to the Library Board of Trustees. Speaking at their monthly meeting on January 20, Harris presented the Illinois House of Representatives Certificate of Recognition to Board President Kerry Pearson and Executive Director Jason Kuhl. The certificate reads:
 
"The 98th General Assembly, House of Representatives, acknowledges Arlington Heights Memorial Library in recognition of receiving a five star rating in Library Journal's national rating of public libraries for seven years in a row."
 
The library was one of only 21 libraries in the nation to have earned five stars for each of the past seven years. Star ratings are based on the annual number of library visits, circulation, program attendance and public Internet computer use. The library's range of programs for children, teens and adults plus specialized services offered in the library's Business Center and Training Center were key in receiving this distinctive recognition.
 
"When I heard about the five-star rating I said that's a real achievement," Harris added. "It speaks well of the board, the staff and overall of the community's involvement. Hats off to all of you for what you do."

Following a six-month pilot period, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Board of Trustees voted to extend the library’s weekend hours, remaining open until 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and opening the library an hour earlier, at 11 a.m., on Sundays. The cost for the library’s extended hours will be managed within the library’s currently approved budget.
 
The library’s new hours are:
Monday–Friday  9 a.m.–10 p.m.
Saturday  9 a.m.–8 p.m.
Sunday  11 a.m.–8 p.m.
 
The pilot program was based upon a recent survey of library customers which indicated many residents wished the library offered more hours on the weekends. An extensive study of customer use during the pilot program confirmed these survey results. For example, use of the Studio saw a 67 percent increase in weekend reservations. On average, 165 customers visited the library per hour during the pilot program, using the library during hours the library previously would have not been open.
 
"These expanded hours stem from the fact that people's lives are busier than ever, and we want to make it as convenient as possible for them to visit the library," said Executive Director Jason Kuhl. “We saw strong use of the library in all areas and are happy to continue this customer service going forward.”

On September 20, Marianthi Thanopoulos of Arlington Heights was sworn in as the newest member of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Board of Trustees. She will serve until the next general election on April 4, 2017.
 
Thanopoulos is the Community Engagement Liaison for the Village of Mount Prospect and a documentary producer. She obtained a Masters of Arts in social sciences from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts in communications from DePaul University. She formerly served as a communication and marketing liaison for the Evanston Public Library and describes herself as an “avid reader” who “deeply understands the value that people place on Library services, programs, events and community outreach.”
 
The seven-member Board of Library Trustees sets the library’s tax levy and budget as well as library policies. Trustees are elected for six-year terms.

On Tuesday, May 16, the newest members of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library Board of Trustees were sworn in. The seven-member Board of Library Trustees sets the library’s tax levy and budget as well as library policies. Trustees are elected for six-year terms.
 
Debbie Smart Debbie Smart has served as a trustee for six years and has held the positions of treasurer and president of the Board of Library Trustees. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Arlington Heights, Arlington Heights Historical Society, Questers, Kappa Delta Sorority, Arlington Heights Art Commission, St. John UCC Church and the Chamber of Commerce. She was a recipient of the 2014 Hearts of Gold Award for volunteering.
 
Debbie Smart John Supplitt is the senior director of constituency sections for the American Hospital Association. He has 25 years of experience with staffing of and participating on national non-profit boards and panels. Supplitt has a Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University and master’s degrees in public administration from New York University and business administration from Loyola University of Chicago.
 
Debbie Smart Christine C. Tangney is a professor in clinical nutrition and Associate Dean for Research for the College of Health Sciences at Rush University Medical Center. She is involved with the American Cancer Society, and provides lectures and demonstrations about healthy eating and cooking to cancer survivors. She has been a speaker for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women program. Tangney was elected to a four-year unfilled term. 
 
Debbie Smart Marianthi Thanapoulos is the community engagement liaison for the Village of Mount Prospect. She is the president of Tharos Productions, a local not-for-profit. She is a past member of Women in Film and has volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is a member of the PTA and has presented at the University of Chicago. Thanapoulos was first appointed in August of 2016 and served on the Finance and Human Resources Committees of the Board of Library Trustees.

One Book, One Village, the library's community-wide reading initiative, topped the agenda at the Village's Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, September 21. Deputy Director Jeremy Andrykowski took to the podium to spread the word about this year's selection, The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez
 
"This is the second year in a row that the library’s offering One Book, One Village," Andrykowski said, "And the idea is simple – we want to build community by inviting all of Arlington Heights to read the same book at the same time."
 
Andrykowski introduced a prerecorded video of the author which was played for the mayor, trustees and residents in attendance. 
 
He concluded his remarks by highlighting the author visit by Cristina Henríquez on Thursday, November 12 which is being presented in partnership with the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre. The interview-style program begins at 7 p.m. followed by a book signing with the author.  Arlington Heights residents can register for this event beginning October 1.

How do you take an existing product and make it better? Just ask the 29 eighth graders at Thomas Middle School who recently completed a new, 9-week elective focused on three-dimensional printing, research and design. Titled 3D RD, the first-time course challenged the students to create or redesign every day products using 3D technology resources available both at school and at the library including Tinkercad, an online design application, and the Hub’s MakerBot 3D printer.

The course culminated on January 20 when the students presented their final 3D projects before an audience of some 50 parents and teachers. Thomas Middle School Principal Brian Kaye emceed the program which was held in the Hub. Students presented ideas and 3D models that ranged from a clever set of interchangeable scissors handles, designed by Arlington Heights students Zoe Axelrod and Annie Waz, to an always in demand TV remote holder.

“Give me a show of hands, how many of you guys have lost your remotes,” asked Emil Harb and Michael Macynski, the student engineers of a sleekly-designed TV remote holder. “This is the item that shall fulfill your needs!”

In all 12 groups of students presented and displayed their printed 3D prototypes at the library.

“The kids were really well-prepared,” says Teen Services Supervisor Tom Spicer, who worked with the District 25 students. “It was really great to see that they were able to start using the modeling software to design and print workable prototypes and products.”

“It was really gratifying to see the students present their final products,” added Jim Grant, Thomas Middle School industrial technology teacher and creator of the class. “It was fun trying something new, and it was great working with the Hub staff. The teamwork between the school and library provided enhanced learning for the students and resulted in some really innovative and creative 3D products.”

Thomas Middle School will offer 3D RD in the spring with a new class starting in April.

The library was bustling with activity this weekend with a record-breaking number of visitors coming to see the amazing one-of-a-kind creations of the Northern Illinois LEGO Train Club on exhibit in the Hendrickson Room. More than 6,200 guests visited the exhibit Saturday and Sunday. Eleven train club members spent six hours assembling the main display. In addition to the Hendrickson exhibit, the library offered LEGO Club in the Marketplace, with large crowds on both days making models then displaying them at the library. 6.012 Patron-Generated Content

The Library offers various venues in which patrons can contribute content that is accessible to the public.  These include, but are not limited to, blogs, reviews, forums, and social tagging on the Library’s website and catalog.  Any instance in which a patron posts written or recorded content to any of the Library’s venues that are accessible to the public is considered “patron-generated content” and is subject to this policy.
 
By contributing patron-generated content, patrons grant the Library an irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual right and license to use, copy, modify, display, archive, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works based upon that content.
 
By submitting patron-generated content, patrons warrant they are the sole authors or that they have obtained all necessary permission associated with copyrights and trademarks to submit such content.
 
Patrons are liable for the opinions expressed and the accuracy of the information contained in the content they submit.  The Library assumes no responsibility for such content.
 
The Library reserves the right not to post submitted content or to remove patron-generated content for any reason, including but not limited to:
 
  • content that is profane, obscene, or pornographic;
 
  • content that is abusive, discriminatory or hateful on account of race, national origin, religion, age, gender, disability, or sexual orientation;
 
  • content that contains threats, personal attacks, or harassment;
 
  • content that contains solicitations or advertisements;
 
  • content that is invasive of another person’s privacy;
 
  • content that is unrelated to the discussion or venue in which it is posted;
 
  • content that is in violation of the Library’s Code of Conduct or any other Library policy
