For teens entering 712 grade in the fall of 2018

  • Open to Arlington Heights residents only
  • All first-time participants must be interviewed
  • All participants must attend one orientation
  • Each volunteer will be a member of one squad
  • Each squad will be working directly with two staff members to accomplish specific projects

Review the squads listed below and be prepared to select three on the application to be considered for.

Applications will be available April 1 – April 30 and will be online only.  If this is your first year for Summer Volunteer Squad, click the New Volunteers link. If you were part of Summer Volunteer Squad in past years, you do not need to reapply. Click the Update link.

Consider joining this group to present storytimes through reading aloud, crafts, and other activities for ages three to six.  You will design each program deciding what books to use as well as puppets and music.
 
Book Buds
Thursdays, 1-3 p.m.

This squad will help kids entering grades 1-3 keep up their reading skills over the summer. Squad members will choose books based on a theme and be expected to read aloud, listen to and plan activities for their young readers.

Whether you’re a master coder or a complete noob, join us for a summer of programming and put your skills to the test! This summer, <code>breakers will explore new coding languages and technologies to program video games. You will then share your nerd knowledge with others by creating and leading library events to encourage others to dabble in the joys of coding and gaming.

Are you a foodie and a history buff? Ever wonder where SPAM came from, or why your grandparents were crazy for Jell-O salad? Become the co-creator of a cookbook and find out the answer to these questions by joining our summer squad! This summer we will be collecting recipes for a heritage cookbook and exploring local history through food.

Exhibit Guides engage customers of all ages and backgrounds in “Bravo! Chris Raschka” exhibit at the library. With training, they will plan and present activities inspired by the children’s book illustrator and author Chris Raschka. Squad members will answer questions from visitors and make the exhibit a welcoming, learning experience.

Organize and run craft programs that you design for kids. Decide on what crafts to present then assist in the creation of the finished product.

Join our Bookmobile and outreach staff as we visit the families of migrant workers at the Arlington Racetrack this summer. Volunteers will prepare and present bilingual programs for children. Native Spanish speakers and students who have taken Spanish language classes are encouraged to apply.

Pop-Up Players

Do you love acting, writing, and improvising? Do you spend hours on YouTube watching Les Mis flash mobs? Do you want to improve your public speaking skills while having fun? The Pop-Up Players will be creating and presenting interactive theater and storytelling events out in the community, to delight and inspire people of all ages.
 
Sprout Squad

Learn about where food comes from in this summer squad! We will plant, maintain and harvest healthy, sustainable produce. We will also experiment in the kitchen and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Get your hands dirty each week and show off your green thumb in this hands-on group! No gardening experience necessary.

Help at the summer reading table in Kids' World. Register children for the program and explain how to play. Hand out prizes and supervise the Punch In! game.
