The Literacy Office at the library assists in locating appropriate literacy materials for both students and instructors, and provides information regarding ESL, reading classes, and other literacy programs in the area. The direct line to the Literacy Office is 847-506-2632.

ESL Collection
A comprehensive collection of over 2000 fiction and nonfiction materials for adult new readers, speakers of English as a second language, and instructors includes books and electronic media. Useful materials on citizenship, TOEFL, and GED preparation are also available.

Computer Learning
Those interested in improving their English language and/or reading skills can engage in an interactive learning experience using Literacy Office computers and software available by appointment. A variety of software programs can be combined to address individual needs.

Pronunciation
Grammar and writing
TOEFL preparation
Reading comprehension
Literacy Office staff and volunteers are readily available to provide assistance to computer learners.

One-on-One Conversation
One-on-one conversation practice, provided by volunteers, is available by appointment for advanced students who wish to improve their conversational and reading skills.

Beginning ESL Class
for Adults

Fridays, 9:30 a.m.–noon, beginning January 11, Hendrickson Meeting Room

This free class, for adults who wish to learn English, is ongoing throughout the year. Participants must register in advance in the library's Literacy Office. Enrollment is limited. Preference will be given to A.H. residents and those working in Arlington Heights. The class is co-sponsored with the Village of Arlington Heights and District 214.


Tea & Talk

Wednesday June 11 , 1:30–3 p.m., Hendrickson Room

Join us for tea and a chance to practice your English skills with people from all over the world. We encourage you to share your ideas and have fun as we discuss topics of interest to you. The group meets monthly, and there's no registration. To learn more, contact the Literacy Office at 847-506-2632.

Note: Classes are free. However, there is a donation request of $10 per class for materials.

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library sponsors classes directed by District 214’s READ TO LEARN Literacy/Volunteer program. The READ TO LEARN program includes:

One-on-one reading sessions for all English-speaking adults who are learning to read and/or developing reading skills.

New classes begin in the spring and fall and are held in the Hendrickson Room at the library.

You must attend the first meeting date shown for the class you have selected. No advance registration is accepted. Students wishing to enroll will be tested at the first class session and will be notified if they are accepted for the class. Enrollment decisions are based on skill level and available openings. Returning students may be given priority.
