Read Review

A short story with no depth
»
»
I got this book on the strength of the introductory story "All Systems Red", which I believed was a short introductory story intended to prove to a publisher that a series of novels based on that premise would be viable.

I was wrong. These are one hour reads, chapters of what should be one book, "The Murderbot DaiRY".

Twenty years ago they would have been included in books of collected short stories. Collectively the four books at their discounted prices cost more than a novel by an acknowledge science fiction master author like Clarke, or one like Ringo.

This is a pity because the premise is good and the protagonist is interesting There was an opportunity to present a story with a objective, an arc leading to a conclusion, instead of episodes. But these short stories individually are not worth the time needed to get into the universe they describe and leave it again. They are one dimensional drafts, not fully developed novels.

Hopefully the author will return to this some day, flesh it out and release as the book it could been.
