The End of the Wasp Season

The End of the Wasp Season by Denise Mina begins with a gruesome murder of a young woman living in a wealthy suburb of Glasgow. Through this woman’s eyes we can see the young intruders, turned murderers, but it takes the rest of the book to uncover their true details and motivations. Detective Sargent Alex Morrow, who is five months pregnant with twins, is assigned to investigate the gruesome murder along with a group of unmotivated, sometimes belligerent, team members. The story twists around, introducing numerous potential suspects that eventually lead to dead ends. When the police finally act upon a seeming random lead they find a link between their murder and the suicide of a much hated local developer. The many threads of the story are wrapped up and the murder finally solved with the help of a technical forensics expert. The story was a little too slow for my taste. The character development was fine, but the dead end leads were a bit tiresome. Since we had a fair idea from the start who the murderer was, all the other chasing around seemed pointless. Maybe the next book starring Detective Alex Morrow will use some of the characters that were introduced in this book but didn’t really seem to fit into the story.
