Read Review

“The Guns At Last Light” benefits from 70 years of analysis and study, with facts like the “typical soldier stood five feet eight inches tall and weighed 144 pounds…”

Atkinson’s in-depth coverage of the wrangling between Eisenhower and Montgomery was tedious, but then again, so was Monty.

Just like a survey course, by necessity, the book rushes over major campaigns.  For more detailed and contemporaneous treatment of important campaigns of the European Theater of WW II, read ”The Last 100 Days" and “Battle: The Story of the Bulge” by John Toland, as well as “The Last Battle”, “A Bridge Too Far,” and “The Longest Day: 6 June 1944 D-Day” by Cornelius Ryan.
