My knowledge of this book and desire to read it came from the movie "Lincoln" which is in small part based on "Team of Rivals". I figured if I appreciated the movie how much more would I appreciate the book? Team of Rivals is an excellent portrayal of Abraham Lincoln which made me laugh at his jokes and anecdotes while simultaneously gritting my teeth over the frustrations he endured throughout life. The book clearly demonstrates the political prowess of Lincoln through his ability to consolidate his rivals into a functioning cabinet and demand a grudging respect at worst from his critics. Overall it was a highly enjoyable read, more than worthy of the Pulitzer it won. It truly made me rethink what I thought I knew about an American legend and discover a fresh perspective on the man that is Abraham Lincoln.
