Volatile Times

Most investors track the major indices - - e.g., DJIA, S&P, etc. A lesser known index among the hoi polloi (which includes me) is the Volatility Index (VIX). Often referred to as the "fear guage," the VIX provides a window into investor sentiment and market fluctuations. In brief, lower values inspire investor confidence; higher values instill investor pessimism. You can track the VIX here, courtesy of the Chicago Board Options Exchange.
