We're almost finished with re-arranging the Picture Book section of Kids' World. The books are still in order by author but are in bins according to fun topics. Beautiful signs created by the library's graphic artists display the different subjects - Things That Go, Pretty and Pink, Growing Up, Play, Animals and more. It's empowering for kids because they can now browse in the areas that interest them. If you want a tour stop by the Kids' World Desk and we'll show you around. Hope to see you soon!

Even though our yards are filled with snow, we know it's on it's way. We have to believe it will soon be warm enough for a walk without putting on boots. The library has a lot of books about outdoor activities, projects and the seasons. Here's a list of books to share with your child about Spring. Even if you don't build that birdhouse - you can still look at the pictures and talk about it. It's been a long, hard winter for everyone and kids like to dream about warmer weather and playing outside too. Have fun together thinking about Spring!

Sixteen years ago a novel was published in London that changed the world of children's book publishing forever. It was entitled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The next year, it was published in the U.S. with a different title - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The author, J.K. Rowling, brilliantly captured the imagination of children all over the world with her stories. Through the years, I have been told by many parents that this series encouraged their children to read. The books are enjoying a re-release right now with beautiful new cover art. A new generation of children will discover these titles with their engaging stories of friendship, magic and good triumphing over evil.  Please visit the Kids' World page and click on booklists for more reading suggestions. Or visit us in Kids' World.

The Chicago Tribune had a great article this week about preventing "summer slide" - when your child loses academic ground during the summer. One of the suggestions to prevent this is to sign your child up for a summer reading program at a public library. This is great advice because it's a documented fact that children who are registered in summer reading programs do better when returning to school in the fall than those who didn't participate in a reading program. This year the Kids' World Make It! Read, Discover, Create program encourages kids to chose their own goals and discover new information about topics they're excited about. Please come in and sign up for this amazing, motivating program. As always, we have our popular reading lists available too. They can, also, be accessed  here. Hope to see you soon!

Did you know that dog bite injuries are among the leading cause of pediatric admissions to hospital emergency departments with half of all children being bitten by the time they are 12 years old?

Learn how to prevent dog bites in our Dog Safety class Friday, May 24 from 1:00-1:45 in the Hendrickson Room (Register, ages 4 and up).

Rainbow Assisted Therapy's dog safety experts will teach children how to interact safely with dogs, how to read canine body language and techniques to use when faced with an aggressive dog.

The therapy dogs will also put on a show demonstrating therapy skills such as jumping through hoops, playing musical instruments and bowling.
