The Chicago Tribune had a great article this week about preventing "summer slide" - when your child loses academic ground during the summer. One of the suggestions to prevent this is to sign your child up for a summer reading program at a public library. This is great advice because it's a documented fact that children who are registered in summer reading programs do better when returning to school in the fall than those who didn't participate in a reading program. This year the Kids' World Make It! Read, Discover, Create program encourages kids to chose their own goals and discover new information about topics they're excited about. Please come in and sign up for this amazing, motivating program. As always, we have our popular reading lists available too. They can, also, be accessed  here. Hope to see you soon!

Did you know that dog bite injuries are among the leading cause of pediatric admissions to hospital emergency departments with half of all children being bitten by the time they are 12 years old?

Learn how to prevent dog bites in our Dog Safety class Friday, May 24 from 1:00-1:45 in the Hendrickson Room (Register, ages 4 and up).

Rainbow Assisted Therapy's dog safety experts will teach children how to interact safely with dogs, how to read canine body language and techniques to use when faced with an aggressive dog.

The therapy dogs will also put on a show demonstrating therapy skills such as jumping through hoops, playing musical instruments and bowling.

If you're in 7th grade and older you need to check out the library's new space for teens - it's called The Hub. It's beyond anything you've ever seen in the library. There are DIY kits - this month's is a marshmallow launcher. You can check out MacBook Airs to use in the room plus Wii, PlayStation and X-box games. You can, also, sit and read, study or draw.  Seriously - you need to get in here.

Considering the tragedies this week in Boston, we all worry about the children in our lives and how they cope with what seems like an endless stream of fear and sadness. There are books about how adults can help children cope with stress and anxiety and we have put together a list of titles. I also found that the National Association of School Psychologists website also has helpful information. If you would like more information about this topic please don't hesitate to contact the library.

You never know what you will find in Kids World. Yesterday we were all about making robots with just a pager battery and 3 volt motor. Of course we had to put our own spin on it by covering the electronics with a decorated plastic egg. Check out the results!
