Splat the Cat by Rob Scotton may be just the book for your kindergartner. Or maybe he or she will identify with Too Many Toys by David Shannon. Both books are nominated for the 2011 Monarch Award which is designed to encourage Illinois children to read critically and to become familiar with children’s books, authors and illustrators. Illinois children in grades K–3 vote annually for their favorite author and/or illustrator from a list of 20 books nominated for this award.
Children in Illinois can also vote each year for the Bluestem Awards (for grades 3–5) and the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Awards (for grades 4–8). The 2011 nominated books for all these awards are shelved together near the graphic novels and magazines at the entrance to Kids' World.
Voting will be held February 1–28, so stop by now to read the books and pick your favorites before the voting begins. If you have any questions, ask at the Kids' World Desk.
