Title from container

Originally released as 25 individual motion pictures from 1962 to 1973

Based on the novel by Shimozawa Kan

"The colossally popular Zatoichi films make up the longest-running action series in Japanese history and created one of the screen's great heroes: an itinerant blind masseur who also happens to be a lightning-fast swordsman. As this iconic figure, the charismatic and earthy Shintaro Katsu became an instant superstar, lending a larger-than-life presence to the thrilling adventures of a man who lives staunchly by a code of honor and metes out justice in every town and village he enters. The films that feature him are variously pulse-pounding, hilarious, stirring, and completely off-the-wall. This deluxe set features the string of twenty-five Zatoichi films made between 1962 and 1973."--Container label

"Blu-ray special edition features: Digital restoration of all twenty-five films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks. The blind swordsman, a 1978 documentary about Zatoichi portrayer and filmmaker Shintaro Katsu, along with an interview with its director, John Nathan; Interview with Asian-film critic Tony Rayns; Trailers for all twenty-five films; Plus: A book featuring an essay by critic Geoffrey O'Brien; synopses of the films by critic, novelist, and musician Chris D.; "The Tale of Zatoichi, " the original short story by Kan Shimozawa; and twenty-five illustrations inspired by the films, by twenty-five different artists."--Container label

The blind swordsman

Zatoichi, portrayed by Shintaro Katsu is a classic movie series for all fans of swordfighting.
A blind outlaw, who is masterfully skilled with his sword, turns into a vigilante as harsh misfortunes befall the poor and hardworking rural common folk in 19th century feudal Japan. He helps the young and old, men and women coming from various backgrounds and classes. Nothing is glorious and glamorous about the stories. The plots do follow a certain template. However, the themes still resonate, style and photography still are worthwhile to contemplate after 40 years since the series' inception.
It will take a super long time to view all 25 films, but even if you saw only a few of them, you will be left with an unforgettable impression.
(The only movie I disliked was the one before the last one. It was overly depressing.)
Different Japanese directors weaved in their distinct styles into this antihero saga, but Shintaro Katsu's unique depiction has kept the protagonist's character solid and legendary. Highly recommended.
