MacQuarrie became the nation's first outdoor editor in 1936.His deftly written freelance stories for the national sporting press brought him the wider attention he deserved. He has since been deemed a "master storyteller," an "artist of pace and dialogue," and "the poet laureate of duck hunting," while the Washington Post deems his tales of the Old Duck Hunters Association "masterpieces you can read over and over."
