Mickey Haller has fallen on tough times. He expands his business into foreclosure defense, only to see one of his clients accused of killing the banker she blames for trying to take away her home. Mickey puts his team into high gear to exonerate Lisa Trammel, even though the evidence and his own suspicions tell him his client is guilty. Soon after he learns that the victim had black market dealings of his own, Haller is assaulted, too, and he's certain he's on the right trail

Great legal thriller by a great storyteller

Michael Connelly knows how to tell a story. I felt like I was listening to someone I know tell about his personal experiences defending an unusual woman in a criminal case while also interspersing tidbits about a personal life filled with a marriage gone wrong and other daily travails. What sets this mystery above the rest is its believability. Too often, authors ask readers to suspend their common sense so they can introduce highly unlikely events and tie together implausible causes and effects. The Fifth Witness is a story about a legal case that could have really happened. The ending is so satisfying, and not at all what I could have predicted. My only regret was finishing the book. I did not want the story to end.
