What's Up at the Library?

Leave the winter blahs behind by learning something new.  Want to start your own business? Need to learn how to use Quickbooks for your job? Or maybe you just want to learn how to play the guitar. Our Learn4Life online classes can help you do all of this and more for free.These six-week classes are instructor-led with assignments, tests and discussions for subjects ranging from certificate health programs to college prep to tech topics. A.H. cardholders can take up to five classes per year.  Learn more 

 

 



The Arlington Heights Memorial Library is featured in the December 12 Chicago Tribune article, "Beyond the stacks: Libraries reinvent themselves for the 21st century." The article highlights many of the ways our library has redesigned its spaces and services for the way our customers are using the library. In its mention of AHML offering over 50 tech classes each month, Executive Director Jason Kuhl says, "It's more about learning the tool than just providing the tool." It reflects the commitment we've made to continue to respond to the changing needs of our residents in the most relevant ways. Read the entire article.

For the sixth consecutive year, AHML has received a five-star rating in Library Journal's national rating of public libraries. Five stars is the highest rating that a library can receive and a recognition achieved by only 1% of the nation's libraries. Star ratings are based on the annual number of library visits, circulation, program attendance and public Internet computer use.

This is an honor for not only our staff and the Library Board of Trustees, but also for you, our customers.  Thank you for making us a 5-star library once again.  See Library Journal's 2013 Index of Star Libraries.

Are you considering purchasing an eReader or tablet this holiday season? Stop by our Tech Bar and try out a variety of devices.  AH cardholders can check out a Nook HD tablet or Nook Simple Touch eReader for two weeks.  Once checked out, our Tech Help Desk can assist you in loading the titles of your choice from our 3M Cloud Library or OverDrive eBook collections.

Local middle school student Josh M. spent the day shadowing the library’s Information Technology department. Josh discovered what a career in Information Technology entails in a library setting. They were connected through the Young Entrepreneurs Academy.

Thanks to the support of library users in the northern part of Arlington Heights, we have decided to continue the book drops at Camelot and Frontier Parks after a successful pilot program with the Arlington Heights Park District this summer. The Camelot Park book drop has been relocated to the south entrance of the tennis courts on N. Brighton Place due to construction. The Frontier Park book drop will remain at 1933 N. Kennicott.

Sunday is typically a busy day at the library, but the crowd swelled even more on Celebrate Your Library Day on August 18. Community members gathered to:
 
  • Learn about new technology at the Tech Bar and tech classes
  • Have their photo taken in the Studio and Lindsey Room
  • Play math games in Kids' World
  • Visit with A.H. authors and local artist Joe Burlini
  • Watch cooking demos and taste some delicious samples
  • Learn about library resources for automotive repairs
  • Tour the bookmobile
  • Sign up to be a Friend of the Library
  • Get their first library card

6.012 Patron-Generated Content

The Library offers various venues in which patrons can contribute content that is accessible to the public.  These include, but are not limited to, blogs, reviews, forums, and social tagging on the Library’s website and catalog.  Any instance in which a patron posts written or recorded content to any of the Library’s venues that are accessible to the public is considered “patron-generated content” and is subject to this policy.
 
By contributing patron-generated content, patrons grant the Library an irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual right and license to use, copy, modify, display, archive, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works based upon that content.
 
By submitting patron-generated content, patrons warrant they are the sole authors or that they have obtained all necessary permission associated with copyrights and trademarks to submit such content.
 
Patrons are liable for the opinions expressed and the accuracy of the information contained in the content they submit.  The Library assumes no responsibility for such content.
 
The Library reserves the right not to post submitted content or to remove patron-generated content for any reason, including but not limited to:
 
  • content that is profane, obscene, or pornographic;
 
  • content that is abusive, discriminatory or hateful on account of race, national origin, religion, age, gender, disability, or sexual orientation;
 
  • content that contains threats, personal attacks, or harassment;
 
  • content that contains solicitations or advertisements;
 
  • content that is invasive of another person’s privacy;
 
  • content that is unrelated to the discussion or venue in which it is posted;
 
  • content that is in violation of the Library’s Code of Conduct or any other Library policy
