How do I get a library card?
A.H. library cards are issued free of charge to Arlington Heights residents. You may apply for a library card online or in person at the Library Card Desk on the first floor. A card can be issued after you have shown a photo ID containing your current incorporated Arlington Heights address. If the address on the photo ID is not current, you must additionally show a utility bill or first-class mail addressed to you and postmarked within the last two weeks. Children under age 18 must also have a parent or guardian fill out and sign an application form. Library cards are issued at the Registration Desk near the Checkout Desk on the first floor.

Are there restrictions on what children can check out from the library?
The library believes that a parent/guardian is the best judge of what a child should be allowed to read or view. Children under age 18 must have a parent or guardian fill out and sign an application form indicating the borrowing option they want for their child. The options are:
Option 1 – Full Service:  All Ages
All items and services in all library departments will be available to the child.

Option 2 – Available for Children and Teens Under the Age of 17
All items and services, except for R-rated or unrated DVDs and videos will be available to the child. This restricted option expires the month following his/her 17th birthday.

Option 3 – Available for Children Under the Age of 12
This option limits the child's borrowing privileges to the Kids' World collection and limits Internet access to the filtered computers in Kids' World. This restricted option expires the month following his/her 12th birthday.
I have a business in Arlington Heights. Is there a card for me?
Arlington Heights businesses may get a specialized card that allows them to use library services and books that support their business. Up to three employees may be authorized to use the card. To apply for a card, submit your request on your business’s letterhead, explaining the nature of your business and the names of the three employees authorized to use the business card. You may apply at the Checkout Desk in the Library or by sending your request to: Circulation Services Department, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, 500 N. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights, IL 60004.

Lost your library card?
To protect yourself from unauthorized use of your card, call 847-506-2626 to notify the library within 48 hours of discovery. The library will then stop all account activity. If you find your card later, it can be reactivated by showing one of the following at the Checkout Desk. An Illinois driver's license, Illinois ID card, title/lease/renter's agreement, a utility bill, or mail postmarked within the last two weeks.

To get a replacement card, bring your Illinois driver’s license, an Illinois ID card, title/lease/renter's agreement, a utility bill or mail postmarked within the last two weeks to the library card Registration Desk on the first floor of the library. Children under the age of 18 must also have a parent fill out and sign an application form to receive a replacement card. A free replacement card will be issued once per calendar year. Additional replacement cards are $1 per card.

Can I use a library card from another public library here?
You can use another Illinois public library card at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library (AHML). The first time you use your library card, you'll need to show verification of your home address. You may also be eligible to purchase a dual service card for our library at a cost of $337.00 per year. If you would like more information on this option, please call the Checkout Desk at 847-506-2626.

How many items can I check out on a library card from another library?
You may have up to ten items on your card at any given time, two of which can be nonprint items. Nonprint includes DVDs, videos, compact discs, audiocassettes, and CD-ROMs. You can use another family member's library card to check out additional items.

Are there items and services that are limited to AHML cardholders?
Yes. The following services are available only to AHML cardholders: checking out Here & Now materials; new, developing collections; reserving library items; requesting items through interlibrary loan; and using laptop computers.

Why does the Arlington Heights Memorial Library have these limits?
The Board of Library Trustees has set these policies to balance the needs of Arlington Heights taxpayers with serving visitors from other communities.

Are my records confidential?
The Library is committed to keeping your borrowing records confidential. To do this we require that you present your library card in order for staff to provide borrowing information to you. Limited information regarding your borrowing record may be given over the phone.

When are the Friends' Used Book Sales?
The Friends of the Library hold four used book sales each year - in February, April, August, and October. Complete information about each sale may be found on the Friends of the Library page.

How can I access the library's wireless network?
To access the wireless network, a user must agree to abide by the terms of the library's wireless network user agreement. Information about the equipment needed is contained in this agreement.
